EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Belqees Restaurant & Cafe is an authentic Yemeni dining destination located in the heart of Amsterdam. Despite serving exceptional cuisine rooted in centuries of Yemeni culinary tradition, the restaurant had no digital presence and was virtually invisible to the thousands of food lovers searching online every day.

StepUp Analytics partnered with Belqees to change that. In just 20 days, we designed, developed, and launched a high-performance, bilingual website that captures the warmth and authenticity of Yemeni culture while driving real business results through modern web technologies and strategic SEO.

From zero online presence to a fully optimised, multilingual digital experience — delivered in 20 days.

CLIENT OVERVIEW:

Client: Belqees Restaurant & Cafe

Cuisine: Authentic Yemeni

Location: Oranje-Vrijstaatkade 66, 1093 KS Amsterdam

Website: belqees.nl

Belqees brings the rich flavours and hospitality of Yemen to the multicultural streets of Amsterdam. Named to evoke the legendary Queen of Sheba — a symbol of Yemeni heritage and grace — the restaurant serves traditional dishes prepared with time-honoured recipes, offering an experience that is as culturally immersive as it is culinarily satisfying.

The restaurant’s goal was clear: establish a compelling online presence that would attract both local Amsterdam residents and international tourists, while faithfully representing the depth and authenticity of Yemeni culture.

THE CHALLENGE:

Before engaging StepUp Analytics, Belqees faced several interconnected challenges that limited its growth potential:

No Online Presence. The restaurant had no website, no structured digital identity, and no way for potential customers to discover them through online channels. In a city where tourists and locals alike rely on Google to find their next dining experience, this was a critical gap.

Poor Google Discoverability. Without a website, Belqees was absent from organic search results entirely. People searching for Yemeni food in Amsterdam, Middle Eastern restaurants, or dining options in the neighbourhood had no way of finding them online.

Communicating Authenticity Without Clichés. Perhaps the most nuanced challenge was one of cultural representation. Yemeni cuisine is relatively unfamiliar to most European diners. The website needed to convey genuine cultural depth — the heritage, the craft, the warmth — without resorting to stereotypical Middle Eastern design tropes or generic restaurant templates.

The core question: How do you build a digital experience that feels as authentic as the food itself?

OUR APPROACH & STRATEGY:

Discovery & Cultural Immersion

Our process began with the restaurant’s owner. Through in-depth conversations, we studied the origins of Belqees, the philosophy behind its menu, and the cultural values the restaurant embodies. We researched Yemeni culinary traditions, architectural styles, and visual motifs to ensure every design decision was rooted in understanding rather than assumption.

Technology Selection

We selected React with Vite as our development stack, prioritising blazing-fast load times and a smooth, app-like user experience. Vite’s optimised build pipeline and hot module replacement allowed for rapid development cycles, while React’s component-based architecture ensured the site would remain maintainable and scalable as the restaurant’s digital needs evolve. The result is a lightweight, modern codebase that delivers exceptional frontend performance without the overhead of a traditional CMS.

Design Philosophy

We adopted a design language defined by elegance and restraint. Minimalist components keep the focus on content. Smooth animations and carefully timed transitions give the site a premium, polished feel without sacrificing performance. The colour palette draws directly from the Belqees brand identity — warm golds, deep earthy tones, and rich accents that evoke Yemeni spice markets and traditional architecture.

Content & Visual Direction

Every word on the website was crafted with intent. We wrote all website copy from scratch, blending storytelling with strategic keyword placement to serve both the reader and search engines simultaneously. The content strikes a balance between warmth and professionalism — inviting new visitors to explore while establishing credibility.

Visually, we sourced and curated high-quality media that showcases the restaurant’s ambience, its signature dishes, and the craftsmanship behind each plate. Photography was prioritised as the primary engagement tool, ensuring first-time visitors feel the energy of the dining room before they ever walk through the door.

THE SOLUTION:

Key Features

The final website is a comprehensive digital experience built around seven core sections, each designed with a specific purpose:

Multilingual Support (English & Dutch). Amsterdam’s diverse population demanded a bilingual approach. The entire website is available in both English and Dutch, ensuring accessibility for local residents and international visitors alike.

Hero Section. A striking, full-width hero introduces the main character of the restaurant — the food, the space, the feeling. It sets the tone immediately and draws visitors deeper into the experience.

About Section. This section tells the Belqees story: its roots in Yemeni culture, its journey to Amsterdam, and its commitment to authenticity. It builds emotional connection and differentiates the restaurant from generic dining options.

Gallery Section. A curated visual showcase of the restaurant’s ambience and dishes. The gallery is designed to be immersive, giving visitors a sensory preview of what awaits them.

Menu Section. The full menu is presented with dish names, descriptions, and prices — eliminating any ambiguity for first-time visitors unfamiliar with Yemeni cuisine. Clear categorisation and thoughtful descriptions make the menu both informative and appetising.

Contact & Location Section. Complete address details paired with an embedded Google Maps iframe make the restaurant easy to find. This section is optimised for mobile users navigating to the location.

Reservation Section. Visitors can book reservations for any party size or occasion directly through the website. A key innovation: the restaurant owner receives each reservation automatically via WhatsApp, eliminating the need for third-party booking platforms and reducing friction in the workflow.

Performance & SEO:

Performance was treated as a feature, not an afterthought. We implemented lazy loading across all media assets, ensuring the website loads fast even on slower mobile connections. On the SEO front, we executed a comprehensive optimisation strategy: meticulously crafted meta tags, keyword-informed content writing, semantically structured HTML, properly named images for Google Image search, and CDN caching to deliver fast access across Amsterdam and surrounding areas. We also built a backlink profile to strengthen domain authority and search ranking trust signals.

Integrations & Social:

The website seamlessly connects with the restaurant’s broader digital ecosystem. Google Maps integration provides precise location context. A dedicated review section showcases Google reviews and ratings, building trust with new visitors through social proof. Direct links to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok allow visitors to engage with the brand across every major platform.

Cultural Design Details:

Two design elements deserve special mention. We incorporated a Yemeni architectural silhouette into the website’s visual language, adding an unmistakable cultural signature that sets Belqees apart from any template-based restaurant site. In the footer, a camel illustration pays tribute to the raw, earthy character of Yemeni heritage — a subtle but memorable detail that visitors notice and remember.

PROCESS & TIMELINE:

20 Days Total Development Time

3 Weeks Concept to Launch

Development ran from 2nd March to 22nd March 2026 — an intensive 20-day sprint from initial concept to live deployment. Throughout the project, we maintained a tight feedback loop with the client. A review section was added at the client’s request during the build process, demonstrating our responsive approach to collaboration. All website content was written by StepUp Analytics, and media content was strategically prioritised to maximise visitor engagement. The project required no major pivots — only minor cosmetic iterations — a testament to the strength of our initial discovery and planning phase.

RESULTS & IMPACT:

The launch of belqees.nl transformed Belqees from an invisible local eatery to a discoverable, credible dining destination in Amsterdam’s competitive food scene.

From Zero to Searchable. Belqees now appears in Google search results for key queries related to Yemeni food in Amsterdam, Middle Eastern restaurants in the city, and neighbourhood-specific dining searches. Where there was once a complete absence from search, there is now a growing organic footprint.

Direct Reservation Pipeline. The WhatsApp-integrated reservation system has created a frictionless booking experience. The owner receives reservations in real time with no platform fees, no middlemen, and no missed enquiries.

Cultural Credibility Online. The website has become more than a digital menu — it serves as a cultural ambassador for Yemeni cuisine in Amsterdam. Visitors engage with the story, the heritage, and the visual identity before they even step through the door.

Mobile-First Reach. With full mobile responsiveness, the site captures the significant share of Amsterdam’s dining traffic that comes from on-the-go smartphone searches by tourists and locals alike.

Social Proof Engine. The integration of Google reviews and direct social media links creates a self-reinforcing trust loop: new visitors see ratings, visit, enjoy their experience, and contribute their own reviews.

Belqees went from having zero digital presence to owning a fully optimised, bilingual, culturally rich web experience — all within 20 days.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Cultural research is a design tool. The most effective restaurant websites are not built from templates — they are built from understanding. Our immersion in Yemeni culture directly informed every design and content decision, resulting in a site that feels genuine rather than generic.

Speed does not require compromise. A 20-day development timeline is aggressive, but thorough discovery and a modern tech stack (React + Vite) allowed us to move fast without cutting corners on quality, performance, or SEO.

WhatsApp as a business tool. For independent restaurants, complex booking platforms are often overkill. Direct WhatsApp delivery of reservations is simple, immediate, and costs nothing — a smart solution for operators who want control without complexity.

SEO is a launch-day requirement, not a phase-two add-on. By baking keyword strategy, semantic HTML, image optimisation, and backlink building into the initial development sprint, we ensured the site started ranking from the moment it went live.

Bilingual by default in Amsterdam. In one of Europe’s most international cities, a Dutch-only or English-only website leaves money on the table. Multilingual support was not a nice-to-have — it was fundamental to reaching the full market.
